Step 5: Confirm Access Before You Reach for the Ratchet
Here's the thing nobody puts in the install manual: the room above the plug matters. If you are working on a front-wheel-drive car or a tight engine bay, you may have a coil pack, wiring harness, or an intercooler intake pipe in the way. The intercooler intake might not block the front plugs, but it can sit directly over the back of the engine. Check clearance before you start removing coils.
If the socket will not seat fully, stop. A universal joint can help, but a cracked plug boot or insulator is worse than taking ten extra minutes to move a coolant reservoir or an intercooler intake out of the way.
Step 6: Know Whether You Are Solving an Ignition or Fuel Problem
Plugs fix ignition problems. They do not fix fuel delivery issues by themselves. If you are reading this because your car hesitates under acceleration, take a second to think through the whole system before ordering parts.
How does fuel injector cleaner work? It is a solvent, basically. It gets added to the fuel tank and helps dissolve deposits inside injectors while the engine is running. It does not clean spark plugs, and it will not fix a dead fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter. If you have a real injector deposit problem, a cleaner may help. But if the plug gap is wrong, you could install a brand-new set and still have the same hesitation.
