If the shell is intact but seized—what I mean is, corrosion has bonded the steel threads to the aluminum head—apply penetrating oil around the base and give it 10 to 15 minutes before you put a socket on it.
Now the advice that fights what most DIY videos show: do not force it. The "it's tight, so I leaned harder" approach is exactly how a $12 plug removal becomes a $600 cylinder-head extraction. Spark plug torque specs on many small engines are in the single digits, in foot-pounds. When a plug doesn't want to come out, stop and reassess. Force is not the missing variable.
The pattern that leads to broken plugs is the same one that causes failed thermostats: long service intervals, corrosion, and waiting until the component stops working entirely. Prevention—replacing plugs on schedule, using the specified part, torquing to spec—is dramatically cheaper than the cure.
When to Stop and Call a Professional
Broken spark plugs have two situations where the DIY route stops making sense:
- If the threads in the cylinder head are damaged, you're not fixing that without pulling the head or installing a thread insert. That's machine-shop territory.
- If an extractor breaks inside the plug, stop immediately. Extractor steel is harder than the plug, which means drilling it out is expensive and easy to get wrong.
A shop will typically charge $100 to $180 to extract what's left, give or take depending on the vehicle. Compare that with the cost of a head gasket or a replacement cylinder head, and the professional option starts to look very reasonable.
