When coolant hits the thermostat's set point, the thermostat opens and lets coolant flow to the radiator. If the thermostat is stuck closed, the coolant can't get to the radiator. Result: the engine gets too hot. If it's stuck open, the engine runs cold and the heater never gets truly hot.
