Honest Limitations of Our Approach

This protocol works well for our typical volume (25,000–100,000 pieces per order) and our standard automotive grades. But if you're running very high volumes with a proven Tier 1 partner, this level of screening might be overkill.

Similarly, if your application is non-structural—like decorative interior trim—the risk profile changes. You might tolerate slightly different surface conditions. That said, we don't compromise on corrosion resistance for anything that goes into a powertrain or chassis.

There's no universal 'best' supplier—only the right fit for your specific tolerance stack and risk appetite.

If you're sourcing automotive stampings for a new project, here's my shortlist of what to verify before committing:

  • Material cert traceability per lot. Not just a generic mill cert. Make sure the stamping plant can link each batch to a specific heat number.
  • Salt spray test frequency. Do they test every batch, or just first articles? We insist on random sampling from every production run.
  • Die maintenance records. A worn die introduces micro-variation that can accelerate corrosion. Ask for their last five maintenance logs.
