To be fair, there are socket sets labeled “universal,” and many of them cover the common sizes. But the phrase gives people false confidence. The trick is matching the socket to the plug before you start, and using a thin-wall version anywhere the well is tight.
While the courier pulled up to the dock, I walked past a piston ring gap chart taped to the workbench. It has been there for years. Engine builders do not set ring gaps from memory because the gap depends on bore size, ring material, and the manufacturer’s specification. No single number works for every engine. And when an order screen shows a camshaft for Daewoo Nubira, ask for the engine code before you hit buy. The name gets you close. The spec gets you correct.
