I've been ordering parts and managing maintenance for a small work-truck fleet for nine years. I don't say that to impress you. I say it because this story comes from someone who should have known better, made the mistake anyway, and paid what my old foreman used to call the stupid tax. By the time it was over, a routine spark plug job on a 2018 F-150 had cost roughly $1,600. None of that money bought a better part. It bought a better process.
It Started With a Cylinder 5 Misfire
The truck rolled in on a Wednesday in late September 2023. It had 94,000 miles and a clear service history, which is why the driver's complaint surprised me: rough idle, worse fuel economy, and an exhaust smell that was stronger than it should have been on a warm engine.
The check engine light was flashing P0305, which pointed to a misfire in cylinder 5. When I pulled the plug, it looked old. Electrodes were worn, and the insulator had a coating that told me the cylinder had been running hotter than normal. The old plugs were due for replacement, no question.
That's where I made my mistake. Not in the parts order. In the decision to stop thinking.

Two weeks later, the same driver pulled in with the same rough idle and a stronger fuel smell. This time I didn't reach for a socket. I sat in the driver's seat with a scan tool and watched live data for twenty minutes.
The front oxygen sensor signal was lazy. Instead of oscillating quickly at idle, it dragged. The fuel trims were swinging in opposite directions as the computer chased a signal that did not match what was happening in the cylinders. That mismatch left the engine running rich in short bursts, and a rich mixture is exactly what kills a fresh set of spark plugs.
In hindsight, the failing O2 sensor symptoms were in the original driver complaint: the fuel smell, the fuel economy drop, the rough idle that did not improve for long. Those are all things a driver notices before a misfire code appears. I skipped over them because the worn spark plug gave me an easy answer.
A 2018 F-150 Exhaust System Leak Made It Worse
Once the truck was on the lift, the second clue showed up: a hairline crack at a flex joint near the front of the 2018 F-150 exhaust system. Soot streaked around the seam. The crack was small, but it was pulling outside air into the exhaust stream, which made the oxygen sensor read leaner than the engine actually was. The computer responded by adding fuel. The cycle was simple: false reading, extra fuel, fouled plug, repeat.
By the time I opened the repair order the second time, the fix was straightforward. Replace the slow O2 sensor, repair the exhaust leak, and put in a fresh set of plugs. The Autolite 255s from the first visit were already black with carbon. I don't hold that against the plug. A spark plug cannot fix a mixture problem it didn't create.

The job should have ended there. It did not. On the final road test, the temperature gauge crept higher than it should, and I caught a faint sweet smell in the engine bay. Back in the shop, I found dried coolant crust around the water pump weep hole. The reservoir was half an inch low.
So can a water pump leak coolant without leaving a puddle on the ground? In my experience, yes. This one was seeping slowly enough that the coolant evaporated on the hot housing. No puddle, no steam cloud, just a crusty trail and a low reservoir. If I had not been watching the temperature gauge, it would have become an overheating failure on the next tow job.

The first invoice was $287. The second invoice was $826. The water pump added another $522. Add it up and the paper total came to about $1,635, and that does not count the extra day the truck was out of service.
None of those numbers are outrageous individually. Together, they show why total cost thinking matters. Price is what a part costs at the counter. Total cost is that number plus your time, your downtime, and the labor of installing the same part twice.
I now keep a short checklist for any truck that comes in with a misfire code before I order a single plug:
- Read the freeze-frame data and fuel trims before buying parts.
- Watch the front oxygen sensor voltage at idle and at 2,500 rpm. A lazy sensor is a failing O2 sensor symptom even when no code is stored.
- Inspect the entire exhaust system with a light. Small cracks leave soot trails.
- Check the coolant level and look at the water pump weep hole while the engine is warm.
In my opinion, Autolite spark plugs still have a place on our shelf. This was never a parts quality story. It was a process story. A good part installed for the wrong reason will still fail, and the cost of that failure lands on the person who ordered it.
These days, I spend twenty minutes reading sensor data before I spend money on hardware. It is the cheapest diagnosis I know.
