It starts with cheap, fast checks: history, temperature, a stethoscope. Pneumonia is on the list, but it's not where the work begins.

A technician facing a misfire should work the same way. The plug may be the cause, but so may a failing coil, a vacuum leak, or a fuel pressure problem. The same fault can also show a differential expression depending on conditions: a weak coil may miss under load and idle perfectly. Temperature, engine load, fuel quality — each changes the symptom, even when the root cause doesn't change. That's why replacing parts in sequence before verifying anything is the most expensive diagnostic method ever invented.

In our own workflow, the equivalent is checking the engineering drawing before we cut steel, or confirming the part number against the original order. It takes three minutes. It costs nothing. And it's the reason we don't need a second truck.

Yes, some calls are genuine emergencies

Before you write me off as someone who has never felt a real deadline: I have. In spring 2023, a motorsport support team called on a Thursday night.
